Na religião de muitos povos, postes ou árvores desempenham funções diversas como objetos de culto. O autor, baseado em numerosa literatura, estuda êstes fenômenos entre diferentes tribos do Brasil, acrescentando analogias encontradas em outras partes da América do Sul, bem como entre índios meso e norte-americanos.
A informação de Nimuendajú (B. C., 1110, p. 105) de que, entre os Botocudos, os postes representantes dos espíritos celestes chamados marét indicam o lugar onde êstes entes descem à aldeia ("they indicate the site within the village where the marét descend from the sky") é interpetado no sentido de que êles descem "pelo poste" ("steigen die Geister nun über den Pfahl herab") (p. 230).
